Futsal for kids and adults with autism

Futsal is played five-a-side on a hard indoor court roughly the size of a basketball court. Games are short, the ball rarely goes out for long, and players get lots of touches. For many autistic players who find outdoor soccer too spread out, too loud, or too unpredictable, futsal offers a more contained alternative that still delivers real match play.

The smaller court means fewer players competing for the ball, which reduces the social decision-making that can overwhelm neurodivergent athletes on a full-sized pitch. Indoor venues have consistent lighting and weather, cutting out the sensory variability of outdoor sport. Shorter games mean less time to become fatigued or overstimulated. Many players who tried mainstream soccer and dropped off come back to sport through futsal.

Football NSW runs AWD state teams called Thunder and Lightning that compete at the National Futsal Championships. These are open to players with intellectual disability, autism, or physical disability. Local club-level All Abilities futsal is available at partner clubs across NSW and ACT, listed in the programme directory below.

State-level competitions are big moments for players with autism who want to represent NSW.
